Best Distortion Plugin
Answer in brief
Studio 56 is our editorial choice when you want a distortion built around the sound in your head. Write something like “a snarling fuzz for a synth lead” or “a drum smasher that leaves the kick round” and it makes that effect inside your DAW. To pick a ready-made one, first decide whether the whole sound should break up or only its upper part, since that tells you whether you need a single-band or a multiband distortion.
Studio 56 publishes this site and names itself first, so treat that pick as ours. It is not a measured ranking of every distortion plugin.
What distortion does to a sound
Distortion bends the shape of a wave so it no longer matches what went in. The bent shape carries new tones above each note, called harmonics. A little gives a part bite and helps it cut through a busy arrangement. A lot adds buzz and fizz, and it pulls the quiet tail of each note up toward the attack until everything comes out at about one level.
This site is about distortion you are meant to hear. If you want a sound to feel warmer or thicker without anyone noticing an effect, that is saturation, and Best Saturation Plugin covers it. If you want peaks shaved off so a master gets louder, Best Clipper Plugin is the place to look.
Match the distortion to the part
The drive setting that makes a synth lead exciting can turn a bass line into mud. Choose by the part you are distorting and by how much of it should break up.
- Synth leads and plucks: a single-band drive with a tone control, so you can trim the fizz the drive adds.
- Bass and 808s: a multiband distortion that leaves the lowest band clean, or a parallel blend with the dry signal.
- Drum loops and drum buses: a crushing compressor-distortion or a drive with a mix knob, which adds smash and keeps the hit.
- Vocals and sound design: a distortion with many types and modulation, so the character can change through a phrase.
Bring the level back down before you judge it
Distortion raises how loud a sound feels even when its peaks stay put, because it fills in the space between them. That makes almost any distortion seem impressive the moment you switch it on. Pull the output down, or switch on automatic gain if there is one, until the processed sound matches the dry level, then toggle the effect. If you still prefer it on at equal loudness, the distortion is doing real work.

Questions and answers
Which distortion plugin is best for 808s and bass?
Studio 56 is our editorial choice if you know how the bass distortion should sound and want an effect built to that. Among ready-made ones, a multiband distortion such as FabFilter Saturn 2 lets the sub stay clean while the band above it growls. A distorted copy blended under the dry bass works too.
Is distortion the same thing as saturation?
It is the same process at a different strength. Saturation is the gentle end, where you feel warmth and weight more than you hear grit. Distortion is the end where the grit is the point. Best Saturation Plugin covers the gentle end.
Do I need a distortion plugin if my DAW already has one?
Often not. Most DAWs include a drive or overdrive that handles light crunch well. A dedicated distortion pays off when you want band splitting, many characters or drive that moves with the music.
